Go Green This Halloween

Halloween is celebrated with great enthusiasm across the world, but it can also be a little scary for the planet. With a bit of planning and some conscious choices, you can enjoy the festivities sustainably by reducing waste and minimising your carbon footprint.

Pumpkins with purpose

If you’re decorating a pumpkin this year, don’t let it go to waste! Pumpkin is rich in vitamins and antioxidants, helps to boost your immune system, and promotes healthy skin. Once you’ve finished showing off your carving skills, why not use the flesh in soups, curries, or even a delicious pumpkin pie? Not a pumpkin fan, then why not try carving other fruits instead? A watermelon with spooky red insides, a pineapple with its scary spiky hair, or even oranges for mini glowing lanterns.

Consciously chosen costumes

One of the most exciting parts of Halloween is dressing up, but the production and disposal of costumes can have a significant impact on the environment. Instead of buying a brand-new outfit, try making your own from clothes or materials you already have, or explore second-hand shops for creative options. If you do decide to buy something new, look out for costumes made from sustainable fabrics. When you’re finished, be sure to donate your costume to a charity shop so it can be enjoyed again next year.

Sustainable sweets

Finally, handing out sweets and chocolates is a massive part of Halloween tradition, but the packaging often ends up in the bin. Try to choose treats that come in recyclable or compostable packaging, options like these are becoming more widely available. If you’re giving out chocolates, look for the Fairtrade logo. This ensures that the cocoa has been sourced from farmers who are paid fairly and work in ethical conditions. It’s a small change that can make a big difference.

This Halloween, let’s keep things fun and green! With a few thoughtful choices, we can all help make the planet a little less frightened this spooky season!
