Sending Christmas cards is a beloved tradition as they remind people that they're being thought of during the festive season. However, millions of Christmas cards are produced, posted and ultimately sent to landfill each year. The good news is, there are plenty of ways to send festive greetings while reducing your environmental impact.
Here are some of my favourite sustainable Christmas card ideas.
Charity cards
Charity Christmas cards still allow you to continue sending physical cards while helping organisations do incredible work. Whether it's supporting children, wildlife conservation or local community projects, your card purchase can make a real difference.
Popular options include cards from charities such as UNICEF, the RSPB, British Heart Foundation, Cancer Research UK, Samaritans, Alzheimer's Society and many other national and local charities. Not only do they look great, but they also allow your festive greetings to go a little further.
Plant a Christmas card
If you're looking for a card that keeps on giving long after Christmas has passed, plantable cards could be the perfect solution. I've recently come across The Seed Card Company who produce cards embedded with wildflower seeds. Once the festivities are over, recipients can simply plant the card in soil and watch flowers grow in the months ahead. It's a thoughtful gift, a Christmas card and a future bee-friendly garden all rolled into one!
Biodegradable Cards
Many Christmas cards contain glitter, foil or plastic coatings that make them really difficult to recycle. Instead, consider biodegradable options from suppliers such as The Little Green Paper Shop. Their eco-friendly card ranges are designed to break down naturally, helping to reduce waste while still looking festive.
E-cards
Many retailers, including Moonpig, now offer electronic Christmas cards that can be sent instantly via email or a social media platform. Alternatively, you could get creative and design your own using free tools such as Canva. I regularly do this for birthdays when friends and family are out of the country on holiday! Canva is a really simple and free design app where you can use an already created template or start from scratch! Adding family photos, festive graphics or even a short video message is such a nice personal touch.
Benefits include:
- No paper or postage required
- Instant delivery
- Easy to personalise
- There's no risk of your card getting lost in the Christmas post
Make it personal
Sometimes the most sustainable choice is simply making the most of what you already have. Look at creating handmade cards from recycled materials, collages from past Christmas cards you have received, old wrapping paper or leftover craft supplies. Not only does this reduce waste, but people often treasure handmade cards far more than shop-bought alternatives.
Christmas is all about connection, kindness and thinking of others. By choosing charity cards, plantable cards, biodegradable options or digital greetings, you can continue enjoying the tradition while making more environmentally conscious choices.
After all, the message inside the card is what really matters!
