If you're thinking about refreshing your space, before reaching for the flat-pack consider giving your home a stylish update that’s kinder to the planet. Green decorating isn’t just good for the environment, it often leads to more unique, character-filled spaces too.

Here are a few simple ideas to help you redecorate with purpose:

Say no to new
Embrace pre-loved items by heading to charity shops, antique markets or car boot sales. Not only are these options often more affordable, but older furniture is frequently better made and full of charm. Websites like Freecycle, Gumtree and Facebook Marketplace are treasure troves for second-hand gems, and a great way to keep perfectly usable items out of landfill.

Pick paint that’s planet-friendly
If you’re painting, choose products with low or no VOCs (volatile organic compounds). These paints release fewer harmful chemicals into your home and are better for both your health and the environment. Big brands now offer eco-friendly ranges in every shade imaginable, and if you're only doing a feature wall, check out paint reuse schemes or local community sharing pages - you might find just the colour you need, without buying new. Also, DIY stores like B&Q often sell uncollected or mis-tinted paints at heavily discounted prices. These are pots that were mixed to order but never picked up - perfect if you're flexible on colour and want to save money and reduce waste.

Go for natural textiles
Give synthetic fabrics a miss and choose natural, biodegradable materials such as organic cotton, linen, hemp or bamboo. These textiles are not only better for the planet, but they also feel lovely!

Light it up (efficiently)
Switching to LED lighting is a quick and effective way to reduce your carbon footprint and electricity bill. LED bulbs last much longer, use significantly less energy, and don’t give off excess heat.

Let nature in
Nothing transforms a room quite like plants. They purify the air, boost your mood, and bring a calming, organic feel to any space. You don’t need to spend a fortune to fill your home with greenery.

  • Ask friends, family or colleagues for cuttings, as many common houseplants (like spider plants, pothos, and succulents) can be easily propagated and shared.
  • You’d be surprised how often you can find healthy plants in charity shops and at car boots too!
  • Reuse and repot by giving old containers a new life as quirky planters. Tin cans, mugs, and baskets can all be turned into homes for houseplants.

Redecorating sustainably doesn't mean compromising on style. By making thoughtful choices and giving existing items a new lease of life, you can create a beautiful home that's full of personality while doing your bit for the planet.
