Whether you’re jetting off to far away shores or staying closer to home, there are plenty of simple, eco-friendly choices that can help reduce the environmental impact of your holiday. Here are a few tips from the Green Team to help you travel more sustainably, and maybe even save a bit of money too!

Pack light
The lighter your luggage, the less fuel is needed to transport it whether by plane, train, car or coach. Every kilo counts, so try to keep things minimal. Lighter bags mean lower carbon emissions and less to carry!

Pack right
Take your reusable essentials with you. Think water bottles, shopping bags and even travel cutlery. If you use them at home, why not continue the habit on holiday? It’s a small step that can make a big difference and might save you money on bottled water or plastic bag charges.

Conserve water
If you can, stay in eco-conscious accommodation that encourages water-saving habits like changing bedding and towels only when needed. It might not seem like much, but it adds up. Did you know that the average hotel room uses 1,500 litres of water per day?! In some parts of the world, tourism uses over eight times more water per person than the local population.

Buy local
Support the local economy by shopping at neighbourhood markets and trying street food. It’s a great way to enjoy authentic experiences, meet local people, and reduce the carbon footprint associated with imported goods.

Use public transport
Explore on foot, hop on a bus, take the tram, rent a bike, or take the train. It’s a great way to immerse yourself in your surroundings and much kinder to the planet than relying on cars or taxis.

Do your homework
Before you go, check what recycling options are available at your destination, and explore the best ways to get around. You might also discover interesting local customs or environmental initiatives you wouldn’t have otherwise noticed.

Leave no trace
Always dispose of your rubbish responsibly - whether it’s on the beach, in the countryside, or exploring a new city. Respect the places you visit by keeping them as clean as you found them.

Every small choice counts, and greener travel is often easier than you might think. So wherever your next adventure takes you, take a little extra care for the planet and enjoy exploring the world more responsibly. Happy holidays!
