Update on residential evictions - Stay on eviction proceedings extended
- AuthorSarah Whitehurst
The Government has announced they are extending the stay on eviction proceedings for social or private rental accommodation by a further two months (to 23 August 2020), bringing the moratorium on evictions to a total of five months. The Government has indicated that it intends to transition out of these provisions by the end of August.
The announcement is made to reassure residential tenants that they will continue to have “certainty and security”.
The press release also stated that ministers are working with the judiciary and legal representatives on new rules to ensure that the courts have all of the information available to them to ensure that they are able to address the need for appropriate protection of all parties, including those shielding from coronavirus.
If tenants are facing financial difficulties the Government has reiterated that landlords and tenants should work together and exhaust all possible options to ensure that cases only end up in court as an absolute last resort.
