This is good news for anyone who exports to Europe, particularly in the current economic climate, where some customers might be less forthcoming in paying their bills. The procedure can be used for a small claims as well as an outstanding high value commercial debt and is based on a system of standard forms. It will allow for disputes to be dealt with by written procedure and, where possible automatic electronic data processing. The idea is that a claimant in the UK can use the European Payment Order procedure to enforce a debt in anywhere in the EU, so if the debtor is sunning themselves on a beach on the Costa Del Sol, the sheriff officers can catch up with him!
