Employers must prepare for Equality Act. 17/09/2010
With just two weeks to go until the implementation of a significant piece of legislation, many employers in the region could be unprepared for the changes it will bring.

That's the view of Phil Cookson of Roythornes Solicitors who was commenting on a survey conducted by Personnel Today magazine.  The snapshot survey indicated that 66% of employers were not prepared for the implementation of the Equality Act, which comes in to force on October 1st.

The Equality Act brings aims to provide a simpler, more consistent and effective legal framework for tackling discrimination.  It introduces new forms of discrimination and sets out the circumstances in which they apply.  It also bans the use of health related questionnaires before a job offer is made, and brings in new rules on pay secrecy.

Commenting of the survey results, Phil said:

"It's quite a significant piece of legislation and the fact that two thirds of employers seem to be unprepared for it is a little worrying, as in many cases employers may need to review recruitment and equality policies to take account of the new measures."

The Equality Act is one of the topics under discussion at a seminar being held by the city based lawyers on October 19th, together with a summary of how to handle Ill Health and Absenteeism.  Anyone wishing to attend should contact Mark Dodds on 01775 842596, markdodds@roythornes.co.uk
