| Employers must 'Face up' to dangers 27/07/2010 The warning comes from Peterborough solicitors Roythornes, whose employment specialist Phil Cookson said:
"Social networking is here to stay and if a business does not have controls in place they are leaving themselves open to many dangers and losses in productivity. There have been a number of high profile cases where staff accessing social networking sites have caused problems. Last year Portsmouth Council banned its employees from accessing Facebook at work after it was discovered that staff spent a total of 71 days worth of time on the site in one month alone."
Phil went on to say that it was opening a whole new area of employment law:
"It really is a minefield if not controlled properly. Whether employees are accessing social networking sites during work hours or writing detrimental comments about their employers for all to see there seems to be a constant flow of new situations which need resolving."
Phil went on to say that all employers should review of their internet usage policy at least every year to ensure it keeps up to date with progress in technology, as the problems are only going to get worse if not acknowledged and tackled:
"Of the 26 million UK people who have a Facebook account, many will be employed and using their employers facilities or commenting about them on social networking sites - if employers are not aware of this and do not have controls in place, it really could be an accident waiting to happen."
